Corinthian Colleges Settles California Lawsuit

One of the largest players in the lucrative "business" of for-profit education, Corinthian Colleges, has settled a lawsuit with the California Attorney General's Office. The hits just keep on coming apparently, leaving one wondering if there are any for-profit schools which are not attempting to cheat their students or marks. Corinthian will pay $6.5 million to settle a lawsuit "alleging" that the chain engaged in deceptive business practices by lying about their job placement record. This is an extremely common practice among for-profit schools, along with lying about accreditation or the transferability of credits, ala Crown College or Florida Metropolitan University. For-profit education's business model favors the bottom line at the expense of the students and thus is fatally flawed. There is a press release from the California Attorney General's Office which includes a copy of the complaint and the final judgment. There are so many instances of students being fleeced by these schools that one might wonder if any of these schools are legitimate. When you have the leaders in the for profit industry admitting that they are lying about their capabilities, then can the others be far behind? The for profit education industry is very much like the health club industry according to this article about American Intercontinental University.

If people really want to train for a job, then why pay anyone? Most classroom courses are a waste of time unless a person is starved for socializing. What Crown teaches us is that student financial aid is a boondoggle and these students would profit more from a visit to the free public library. Seems everyone is looking for an easy ticket to high job status at the expense of someone else. Did Jesus Christ or his disciples go to Harvard? Think about it.

It all comes down to one thing. For-Profit equals BAD. Public equals good! No matter what anyone learns it all comes down to what employers, and ultimately, the public think about what school you attended and the PUBLIC don not care much for private!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

In response to Richard, the reason people pay for education, specifically secondary education through allegedly accredited for profit institutions such as those of Corinthian Colleges, (Everest University, ect.) is simply that it does not matter what you actually know, or how well you practice your area of expertise without some official documentation to back you up, you will never be given a chance at employment. This is especially true in the medical field, (for which many areas of specialization are offered through Corinthian Colleges) and for good reason. I wouldn't want someone dispensing my prescriptions, administering medication or even cleaning my teeth without knowing, not just assuming, that they know exactly what they're doing, would you? I also doubt that the insurance companies would want to take on that kind of potential liability.
These schools prey on the under-educated and underemployed, promising a ticket out of poverty with an education that is much less than promised for a field they may still be underqualified or unable to find work in.

Everest College, a subsidiary of Corinthian Colleges, has plans to set up in Milwaukee, WI, USA. We have recently learned that the institution has had a series of problems with students ranging from misleading about accreditation and the transferability of credits to predatory student loan practices. Milwaukee Alderwoman Milele A. Coggs is apposes the college locating at its desired location and the statements of those affected by the institution would be greatly appreciated.

I was a MA Instructor for this school for 3 years in Columbus Ohio. What you read is true and then some. I did not get fired or anything but quit since it really bothered me the way they were ripping off students, lack of quality management and poor, dirty facilities. My dept chairs never worked one day as MA's or were they trained but yet they were Dept chairs for MA, Pharm Tech and Dental Tech programs. Our Pharm Tech Dept chair could not do one dosage calculation. He was clueless. It was very much a "Who is your buddy"merrit system. I was asked to allow student to inject themselves with expired meds and that was IF we even had supplies. Our MA dept chair claimed to be an EMT, A RN nurse and a sherrif and body recovery specialist. She was none of these. Students are lied too and taken advantage of. For a $20,000 tuition bill, you will never make enough as a MA to repay for loan and still eat. Run from this school and all for profit schools. Least if you attend a real school the person sitting next to you will have a GED or diploma. At Everest, don't count on it!
